Women Made. Fair Trade.
This week Sisterhood Shopping will be shipping out our Spring Awakening Box, and we want to share with you one of the impressive organizations behind your box; Global Girlfriend. This incredible company was started by Stacey Edgar in 2003 with the mission to help women worldwide gain economic security while providing you with unique products and a simple way to help women in need. When we first learned about Global Girlfriend, we were so impressed with their dedication to partnering with women for the long-term through investing in development and educational initiatives.
Meet the Artisans Behind your Spring Box:
Global Girlfriend does more than just provide jobs, they believe in creating long-term partnerships with women globally, and that means providing healthy and safe working conditions, technical assistance, and development strategies to foster prosperity and reduce poverty. Global Girlfriend works with over 100 women’s artisan organizations in over 30 countries.
One of those countries is Vietnam, where your Spring Awakening Box item came from! In Vietnam, Global Girlfriend works with Acacia Creations, Au Lac and CraftBeauty.
Acacia Creations was founded in 2007 by Maura Kroh during her work in refugee camps across Africa. The mission of Acacia Creations, like Global Girlfriend, is to improve lives in a long-lasting and sustainable way. They go beyond fair trade by creating jobs, providing training, and giving back o communities through education and healthcare iniatives.
CraftBeauty works alongside Acacia Creations and holds a special place in our community as it helped provide the unique item in your box. This Vietnamese organization works with Global Girlfriend to provide skills and a steady source of income to disadvantaged women who wouldn’t otherwise have any options, including farmers and women with disabilities. In Vietnam, only about 15% of disabled persons receive training in vocational skills and many end up unemployed and chronically poor. CraftBeauty is changing that statistic for the positive by employing over 100 disabled women in Hanoi and surrounding areas. Like the impressive gift in our Spring Awakening Box, CraftBeauty women work with various materials to create a wide range of products including handbags, accessories, clothes, scarves and soft furnishings that incorporate unique textile techniques.
Global Girlfriend and CraftBeauty partner to offer women between the ages of 18-40 years old a chance to learn about silk weving, tailoring, embroidery, fashion and quality control.
Aside from continuing to partner with organizations like Acacia Creations and CraftBeauty, Global Girlfriend wants to expand their impact to new regions and new initiatives. Global Girlfriend’s reach spans o India, Guatemaa, Lesotho, Nepal, Ethiopia, Colombia, Bangladesh, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Kenya, USA, El Salvador, Zambia, Swaziland, Peru and Cambodia, and they are expanding their educational initiatives. Each box shipped from Sisterhood Shopping was an initiative to help Global Girlfriend support girls’ education through GROW (Girl’s Right to Opportunity Worldwide). Not only is that something we can jump onboard with, but is just one more reason we LOVE working with Stacey and her team at Global Girlfriend!
